Here are the answers to your burning braces questions. Of course, we’ll go over everything in more detail at your consultation.
Q: What happens when my braces are put on?
A: We’ll get into the nitty-gritty at your consultation so you’ll know exactly what will happen, but for now, we’ll cover the basics. The painless process takes about 45 minutes to an hour. First, Dr. Chan polishes your teeth and paints on a solution to prime them for the adhesive. Then, he applies the bonding glue and sticks on your brackets. Lastly, he slides your archwire through and holds it in place with elastics, unless you’re wearing self-ligating braces, which don’t use ties. We’ll let you know how to take care of your braces and you’ll be on your way to a perfect smile.
Q: What happens when I get my braces removed?
A: Dr. Chan uses special tools to gently loosen and remove the brackets and wires. He scrapes off the glue and polishes your teeth so they’re smooth and ready to show off. He’ll congratulate you and let you check out your new smile.
Q: Am I too old for braces?
A: Of course not! A good percentage of our patients are over the age of 21. Not only can braces align your bite and boost your confidence, straightening your teeth can greatly improve your oral health. Adults tend to be the best candidates for esthetic choices like ceramic braces and Invisalign so treatment can be discreet.
Q: How much do braces cost?
A: Unfortunately, we can’t give you an accurate number until we’ve had the opportunity to check out your teeth and jaws. The price tag for braces treatment varies depending on the severity of your case, how long treatment lasts and the type of braces you choose. We believe in making treatment affordable, so we approach cases conservatively and offer payment plans, including a no-down-payment option, to suit your budget. We also accept most insurances, which can have a big impact on your out-of-pocket expenses. At your consultation, we’ll go into detail concerning the cost and we’re always up front so you never have to worry about hidden fees.
Q: How long do I need to wear braces?
A: Your overall treatment time will depend on your specific orthodontic problem, how severe it is and which type of braces you opt for. In general, patients are in braces for 12 to 30 months.
Q: How often do I need to come in for appointments when I have braces?
A: Appointments are held at regular intervals four to eight weeks apart so that Dr. Chan can adjust your braces and check your progress. These appointments generally take between 20 and 40 minutes depending on your needs.
Q: Do braces hurt?
A: You should never feel real pain while wearing braces. If you do, call us right away. When you first get your braces put on, and after adjustments, your teeth can feel a little sensitive. This mild discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and goes away in a few days.
Q: Do I still need to visit my dentist while wearing braces?
A: Yup. While your dentist and orthodontist both work with teeth, they focus on different things. Going to your dentist for your regular check-ups and cleanings will help you avoid tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health problems. It’s actually more important than ever when you’re wearing braces.
Q: How often should I brush my teeth while wearing braces?
A: We usually recommend brushing your teeth at least four times a day (after breakfast, lunch and dinner and before bed).
